First: Make sure you have an Arduino (Nano) with an actual FTDI Chip. If you have an CH340 Chip, this Tutorial will give you headaches! (thanks to pablo braacciale and MITEEman)

You will need these Driver straight from the FTDI Website:

Mirror from 6th of October 2014 in case the link will go dead or is altered by FTDI:

Some people reported problems with the DRiver resulting in a "Start Code 10 Error" on Win7 and Win8. I have no idea why that happens but Latif Berisha posted a link to another driver source in the comments (+1 him for that). For your convenience, this is his comment:

— "The bricked Arduino will work with no problem using this driver:
http://smarttronik.com/index.php?controller=attachment&id_attachment=138 "

Mastadex supplied the following information:
" +MNHS Beacon I did some digging and found that the CDM 2.04.16 driver can be used in place of the SmartTronik driver you posted. It appears to have fixed whatever was causing my BSOD earlier. I uploaded the driver here: https://anonfiles.com/file/67ad47aca378860b518cbb43f766a8c0 (link not virus-tested, note by MNHS)
Note that this driver is also WHQL certified and doesn't produce 'untrusted driver' warnings."

If you want to find out how you can set your Product ID (PID) of your FT232R manually, MrPvallone has a video of the process and the tools to use:

Un-brick the FT232RL FTDI USB Serial Adapter

I hope that this can direct you to solve your problem. As I said: I have no Win8 System on any of my machines. Sorry.
