Raspbian - The base operating system. Stable. Love it.
Samba - Share your files (compatible with Windows + MacOSX)
Install it: sudo apt-get install samba samba-common-bin
Configure your files and folders here: sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
NFS - The faster way to share files (Linux)
This is pretty advanced, so I'll let you figure it out.
OwnCloud - A free alternative to Dropbox (use your HDDs as the cloud)
Dropbox - Backup your data from the cloud
rsync - the awesome way to backup and automate backups
