Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make chocolate cake! This chocolate cake recipe is moist and delicious, perfect for the chocolate lover in your life. The secret to this yummy chocolate cake is sour cream. To start, let two eggs come to room temperature and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Melt three ounces of bittersweet chocolate in the top of a double boiler, and let it cool. Combine 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, a teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a medium bowl. Stir this mixture well. Beat 1/2 cup of shortening and 1 1/4 cups of sugar in a large bowl until they are light and fluffy, about four minutes. Beat in the two eggs and a teaspoon of vanilla until they're combined. Add in the cooled melted chocolate and an 8-ounce container of sour cream. Beat this until mixed. Alternate adding in the dry ingredients and a cup of milk, beating it on low until just combined. Bake the cake layers until their tops spring back when lightly touched, or about 25 minutes. Let them cool on wire racks. For the chocolate frosting recipe, melt a 12-ounce package of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of butter, cut into pieces. Allow this to cool, then mix in one 8-ounce container of sour cream. Add 4 1/2 cups of sifted confectioner's sugar, stirring well before spreading it over one cake layer. Place the second layer on top with the flat side down. Coat the whole chocolate cake with the chocolate icing. This homemade chocolate cake is a cake recipe you'll be asked to make again and again!
