President Mwai Kibaki witnessed the historic burning of 5 tonnes of ivory poached in Eastern and Southern Africa and stockpiled for nearly a decade in Kenya. This is the second high profile incineration of ivory, after 1989 when the Kenya government burnt about 12 tonnes of elephant tusks in a move that eventually led to the imposition of a ban in ivory trade in the country. The burning of the ivory is the climax of the first ever African elephant law enforcement day celebrations aimed at fostering co-operation among countries to combat elephant poaching and ivory trafficking in Africa. Sally Mbilu reports from Manyani field training school in Tsavo west national park.
